Last night I went to my first First Thursday in Portland as a "professional" artist. I had a piece hanging in Blackfish Gallery as part of the Recent Graduates Show and I was lucky enough to have five of my friends and colleagues from Western in attendance with me as we cruised around the Pearl District looking at art. Last night was good. Really good. Since the end of my very last term at Western (graduated with a 3.45 thank you very much) I haven't had the exposure to like-minded artistic people, let alone been able to go and experience art in person anywhere. There have been family obligations that have kept me fairly confined to the Stayton area for much of the last month and it felt really good to get out and just enjoy Portland. I'm hopeful that as time goes by I'll be able to do this more often and who knows, maybe I'll find a gallery that likes my work and wants to show my stuff. In the meantime, I leave feeling a little more energized to keep working in my studio at home while we all try to beat the heat. I have to keep moving forward with my work, keep the momentum shifted in my favor. It's a big new world and I've got a lot to do. By the way, if you missed the reception last night and would like to see the Recent Graduates Show, it'll be on display at Blackfish until August 1. Very interesting mix of works by new artists from all over the state. |
